Aiki Woodworks is a creation by Doug Reichert, a Winnipeg local artisan woodworker. He produces a variety of items including kitchen accessories, bowls, cutting boards, health & wellness tools, pens, etc. All this is done in his small shop at his home in Winnipeg’s West End.
Most of the wood that he works with comes from local fallen trees. With friends in Winnipeg Beach, Lorette, Headingly and even in Winnipeg, he finds plenty of wonderful Ash, Oak and Maple logs to work with.
As a practitioner of Aikido (which is the way of harmony with Ki or energy), the focus is on blending with yourself and those around you including what you are working on. I find that working with wood is very much like the martial art of Aikido. Wood has it’s own energy that you need to blend with to work it into a new shape.
My shop started with the purchase of a lathe a number of years ago. The lathe gave me the opportunity to be artistic in my own way. I’m not musically inclined, nor can I draw/paint; the lathe suddenly allowed me to create curves and shapes were there was none.
I started by producing gifts for family and friends and then I was getting special requests for things (like cake knives, canes, etc.).
I hope you like them! I like making them!
